Under the law, probation is a system of supervising and social and educational measures that are taken according to the court's decision and the law to the convicted, a system of some types of criminal punishments not connected with imprisonment, and a system of providing the court with the information about the convicted.
The Law established that legal basis for probation and activity of a probation body is the Constitution of Ukraine, Criminal, Criminal Procedure, and Criminal Executive Codes of Ukraine, this Law and other laws of Ukraine, international agreements, the binding nature of which is granted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The Law established that the probation aims to ensure protection of the society by reforming prisoners, preventing them from committing criminal offences and providing the court with the information about the convicted.
